Clean Energy Finance: Investors Attend U.N. Summit, France Pledges €300M for Solar
More than 500 global investors met at the Investor Summit on Climate Risk, held at U.N headquarters in New York this week.
According to the Washington Post (1/27) U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called on investors to double clean energy investment by 2020 in order to curb climate pollution from fossil fuels and limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius.
Ban Ki-Moon also invited world leaders to join him on Earth Day, April 22, for an official signing ceremony of the new Paris climate agreement, according to a United Nations (1/22) announcement.
In India, the Hindu (1/26) reported that France committed 300 million euros to solar energy development as part of the new International Solar Alliance (ISA) initiative led by France and India.
The Economic Times (1/26) quoted French President Francois Hollande saying the ISA will help mobilize €1.2 trillion by 2030, which in turn will help the world meet a global target set at U.N. climate talks to add 1,000 GW of solar power in a decade.
The New York Times (1/25), in a report on cheap oil and how it might affect climate action, noted that both the United States and China have maintained their clean energy commitments.
Climate Home (1/25) reported that Vietnam’s prime minister called for the review of plans to build coal-fired power plants as part of an effort to protect the environment and support sustainable growth.
