World Leaders Adopt Sustainable Development Goals, Including Climate Change

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in New York City on Friday, September 25.

A UN infographic lists and explains the SDGs, a set of 17 goals to improve the lives of people around the world by combating poverty, inequality, climate change and other challenges. Climate Action is Goal 13.

The New York Times (9/25) covered the U.N. event, which was kicked off by Pope Francis calling on global leaders to care for the world’s people and for the planet, saying harm done to the environment is harm done to humanity.

The New York Times (9/25) covered President Barack Obama’s address to the General Assembly.

Reuters (9/26) covered Chinese President Xi Jinping, who announced an initial pledge of $2 billion to help developing countries implement the SDGs.

On the topic of climate change, the UN News Centre (9/29) featured remarks from leaders of small island states, who said their countries bear the full brunt of climate change.

Bloomberg (9/29) reported remarks from Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who told the U.N. General Assembly climate change is responsible for energy shortages in Southern Africa due to unpredictable rainfall patterns.
