Picture in April 2023, shows a rice farm in Majin Gari, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State (Long: 6.113753, Lat: 9.07204), Nigeria, by Salihu Idris (in the plot), was fertilized solely with biochar and compost, and no synthetic fertilizers, yielded 4.5 tons/ha, without any release of carbon emissions from the farming activity. The farmer, Salisu, is one of the participants of the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services Activity implemented by Winrock International.

Half the world’s total mangrove deforestation since 2000 has taken place in Indonesia, where the main driver is conversion for shrimp ponds. A new cost-benefit analysis by the USAID-funded Climate Economic Analysis Development, Investment, and Resilience (CEADIR) Activity sheds light on the financial and economic value of mangrove conservation, including impacts on near-shore fishing and greenhouse gas emissions.

Improving Community Preparedness through Flood Early Warning Systems

Located in Indonesia’s East Java Province, Kalikatir Village is prone to flash flooding caused by the Klorak River. The river runs through three villages: Dilem and Begaganlimo in the upstream, and Kalikatir in the downstream. A major flash flood that hit Kalikatir in 2017 was a warning for the 1,500 people that live there. Even though there were no casualties due to the flood, the physical damage was substantial, and had a big impact on people’s lives.

Generating Electricity from Biogas from Palm Oil Mill Effluent

Every day, Indonesian palm oil mills emit nearly 2,000 metric tons of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, from the waste treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME), which cannot be discharged in its raw form. Though POME is waste byproduct of palm kernel milling, it can become an energy source when its biogas byproduct is harnessed for electricity production.
