Picture in April 2023, shows a rice farm in Majin Gari, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State (Long: 6.113753, Lat: 9.07204), Nigeria, by Salihu Idris (in the plot), was fertilized solely with biochar and compost, and no synthetic fertilizers, yielded 4.5 tons/ha, without any release of carbon emissions from the farming activity. The farmer, Salisu, is one of the participants of the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services Activity implemented by Winrock International.

The 14 pages, accessible by hovering your mouse over “What We Do” in the website’s top navigation menu, showcase sector-specific work on climate change that USAID is undertaking in a variety of contexts. Each sector page houses an introductory overview detailing related climate impacts and stressors, as well as potential solutions.

Cocoa Industry Looks for Practical Tools for Implementation of Climate Smart Cocoa

The cocoa industry has taken bold steps to preventing deforestation in the Cocoa & Forests Initiative (CFI), a public private collaboration between 33 cocoa and chocolate companies (85% of the industry), the governments of Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, and led by the World Cocoa Foundation and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH). This effort is based on the pillars of preventing deforestation, which include protection and renovation of forests, sustainable and climate smart cocoa production and social inclusion and protection.
