Picture in April 2023, shows a rice farm in Majin Gari, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State (Long: 6.113753, Lat: 9.07204), Nigeria, by Salihu Idris (in the plot), was fertilized solely with biochar and compost, and no synthetic fertilizers, yielded 4.5 tons/ha, without any release of carbon emissions from the farming activity. The farmer, Salisu, is one of the participants of the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services Activity implemented by Winrock International.

Clean water is already hard to come by in the Korogocho slums of Nairobi, Kenya, but when heavy rainfall leads to flooding, it only exacerbates the situation. Clean water sources get contaminated, leaving residents vulnerable to many risks, including waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Mangrove Conservation versus Shrimp Aquaculture: A Cost-Benefit Analysis

Half the world’s total mangrove deforestation since 2000 has taken place in Indonesia, where the main driver is conversion for shrimp ponds. A new cost-benefit analysis by the USAID-funded Climate Economic Analysis Development, Investment, and Resilience (CEADIR) Activity sheds light on the financial and economic value of mangrove conservation, including impacts on near-shore fishing and greenhouse gas emissions.
