In the lead-up to the 2022 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 27th Conference of Parties (COP27), the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) will host its 187th public meeting, focused on the ongoing BIFAD-commissioned study on systemic solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation in agricultural, nutrition, and food systems. Registration is open for this October 26th meeting, and the public is invited to comment on preliminary findings.

USAID Responds to Drought Warnings in Eastern Horn of Africa

To better support the livelihoods of farming communities and their resilience, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance is supporting a project called Standards for Supporting Agricultural Livelihoods in Emergencies (SEADS) to develop evidence-based practice standards for humanitarian agencies that provide crop-related assistance in emergencies. This support can include providing seeds and fertilizer, offering tools and training support, or rebuilding damaged infrastructure, such as irrigation schemes, but all with an emphasis on market-based delivery mechanisms.

To help farmers better manage risk, Feed the Future Partnering for Innovation partnered with four organizations and private sector businesses — Farm Africa and Root Capital, Neumann Gruppe GmbH, and Oikocredit — to launch innovative risk management initiatives that enable smallholder coffee farmers to reap more rewards and face less risk as they cultivate this high-value crop.

Between 2014 and 2015, Jamaica experienced one of the worst seasons of drought in recent history. The impact on the Jamaican economy, especially rural livelihoods, was devastating. According to reports, the annual agricultural production declined by 30 percent from 2013 to 2014. This, along with brush fires, resulted in a $J1 billion ($6.5 million) loss for the economy.
