Burundi
At a Glance
Climate variability and change pose major obstacles to resilience in East Africa. While the region is characterized by rapid urbanization, more than 70 percent of the population still live in rural areas that rely heavily on climate-sensitive rainfed agriculture. Regional climate impacts coupled with rapid urbanization, high rates of poverty, and declining agricultural productivity are expected to threaten food security and livelihoods, strain water resources, expand the geographic range of diseases, and lead to land degradation and infrastructure damage.
