The U.S. government sponsors and participates in other programs and activities that support low emission development.

U.S. Agency for International Development

In contribution to the EC-LEDS program, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) sponsors the following programs and activities:

  • Climate Change Pillar: Clean Energy Activities – reduce climate change by promoting the sustainable use of renewable energy technologies, energy-efficient end-use technologies, carbon sequestration, and carbon accounting.

  • Climate Change Pillar: Sustainable Landscape Activities – reduce climate change by supporting sustainable forest management practices that provide natural resources for local people, preserve the world's biodiversity, and contribute to carbon sequestration.

  • Forest Carbon, Markets and Communities Program (FCMC) – provides missions and partner governments with assistance in developing and implementing integrated Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).

  • Analysis and Investment for Low-Emission Growth (AILEG) Project – informs USAID missions, and hosts country governments of the options available to attract and mobilize investments in clean energy and landscape management. It works with host country governments, civil society, and other stakeholders on the impacts and economic trade-offs of climate change mitigation policies.

  • Low Emission Asian Development Program (LEAD) – assists up to 11 Asian countries in developing LEDS. Implemented by ICF International, the program engages technical expertise and resources from other U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Energy.

  • SERVIR GLOBAL – uses Earth observation science and technology to aid nations with forest carbon assessment and conservation strategies. Information provided by SERVIR, such as the extent of forest area, rate of deforestation, and carbon amounts associated with deforestation, supports implementation of REDD+ strategies.

Latin American Modeling Project

Under the leadership of the EPA and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Latin American Modeling Project (LAMP) focuses on supporting the role of Latin America in addressing global climate change and improving integrated assessment and energy economic modeling capacity in Latin America. A series of modeling forums are bringing together local/regional and global modelers to design and compare models used to assess climate economics and climate-related policies. USAID also participates in the project.



SilvaCarbon is a U.S. government-led program working to enhance capacity worldwide for monitoring and managing forest and terrestrial carbon. It draws upon the expertise of the U.S. scientific and technical community, including experts from government, academia, non-governmental organizations, and industry. Learn more about SilvaCarbon.


Tropical Forest Alliance 2020

Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 is a public-private partnership in which partners take voluntary actions, individually and in combination, to reduce the tropical deforestation associated with the sourcing of commodities such as soy, beef, palm oil, and pulp and paper. Global Forest Watch

Global Forest Watch (GFW) is a dynamic, online forest monitoring and alert system that empowers people everywhere to better manage forests. GFW unites the latest satellite technology, open data, and crowdsourcing to guarantee access to timely and reliable information about forests. Learn more about GFW.
