Bangladesh has taken a leadership role in addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges through its national-level Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (BCCSAP), which outlines its low emission development strategy (LEDS).

Through the EC-LEDS program, Bangladesh and the United States are partnering to identify and prioritize pathways that simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions growth and support the country’s climate resilience and broader economic development goals, including sustainable forest management and clean energy deployment.

Accomplishments and Progress

Training Forest Inventory Teams. U.S forestry experts facilitated an intensive train-the-trainers workshop in Dhaka on quality assurance and control for forest inventory. The course trained partners from various Bangladeshi institutions who will lead quality assurance teams and field teams during the upcoming forest inventory season. Participants in the course will train the field teams in preparation for the inventory. An improved inventory will enable Bangladesh to accurately report its emissions, which helps show the progress that all countries are making to address climate change.– Ongoing

Building National Capacity for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Technology. A remote-sensing specialist from Bangladesh spent 10 weeks training on remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technology at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) facility in Maryland. The fellowship will help generate data for the country’s national forest monitoring system and build national, long-term capacity in remote sensing and GIS technology. – 2016

Building Capacity to Track and Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions. EC-LEDS program GHG inventory experts trained Bangladeshi officials on developing and implementing crosscutting inventory management procedures and sector-specific GHG inventory management systems. The result is improved capacity to track emissions and report for Bangladesh’s Third National Communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. – 2015

Mapping Forest Resources. U.S. experts trained Bangladesh Forest Department staff to use geospatial tools and remote-sensing techniques to measure and map their forests. Maps help them measure their carbon sinks and identify where deforestation is happening. – 2013

Reducing Barriers to Wind Deployment. Bangladesh and U.S. energy experts identified nine sites to deploy wind measurement equipment, which delivered high-quality data for 2 years on wind resource characteristics. Private companies need these data to inform where they invest in wind energy in Bangladesh. – 2013
