As part of the US Agency for International Development's (USAID's) Indonesia Clean Energy Development II (ICED II) Project, the EC-LEDS program will focus on securing additional financing for projects in the country while continuing to build the project pipeline and improve the enabling environment for small- and medium-scale renewable energy projects.

Since 2011, the EC-LEDS program has worked with the Indonesian government to identify and prioritize 118 small-scale [less than 10 megawatts (MW)] renewable energy and energy efficiency projects for financing and deployment. By February 2015, the EC-LEDS program had facilitated financing for 17 projects, assisted the commissioning of four commercial small-scale hydro projects, and provided grants to 10 community-based renewable energy pilots, with total capacity of 22 MW. These completed projects generate electricity for more than 200,000 people each year.

With a total estimated capacity of 866 MW, this effort, led by USAID's ICED Project, will provide clean energy access for 9.3 million people and reduce annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the energy sector by 3.9 million tons carbon dioxide-equivalent, which is like taking more than 820,000 cars off the road for a year1.

Indonesia is a leader in low emission development in the energy sector, setting a clean energy goal of 17% in 2025 in its Blueprint for National Energy Development 2006–2025. Greater use of clean energy will help Indonesia strengthen its energy security, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and provide more people with access to cleaner, more reliable energy.
