Within developing economies, there are significant opportunities to increase investment in clean energy to help nations meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable energy access and the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Recent CPI analysis found that the greatest opportunities for impact are in Sub-Saharan Africa and South and East Asia, with a subset of eight high impact countries alone offering USD 360 billion in clean energy investment potential by 2030.

Blended finance is a key tool to help address some of the risks and barriers faced by investors when pursuing these opportunities.

You are invited to attend a webinar presented by Climate Policy Initiative on Wednesday, April 25 that will present findings from the CPI paper, Blended Finance in Clean Energy: Experiences and Opportunities, commissioned by the Blended Finance Taskforce and contributing to its consultation paper Better Finance, Better World.

Specifically, the webinar will:

  • describe the risks and barriers to investors in clean energy and how blended finance has been used to address them;
  • look at what more is needed to unlock clean energy investment opportunities in developing economies; and
  • provide examples of successful instruments from the Lab and other initiatives that have used blended finance to tackle investment barriers in clean energy.

Presenters:

  • Bella Tonkonogy is a Manager on CPI’s climate finance team. Her primary role on the team is in leading the analysis and development of innovative climate finance instruments for the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, for which CPI serves as Secretariat. As a member of the Lab’s core management team, she leads the work to quantify the Lab’s impact and assess and internalize lessons learned. She also manages projects focused on understanding the effectiveness of innovative finance more broadly, such as a recent project for the Business & Sustainable Development Commission’s Blended Finance Taskforce on how blended finance can be more effectively deployed for clean energy.
  • Alex Clark is an assistant analyst on CPI’s climate finance team, in its San Francisco office. Prior to joining CPI, Alex undertook a wide-ranging fellowship at Harvard University and conducted research on the geopolitics of renewable energy and electric vehicles.
