In the race against climate change, the Paris Agreement has set an ambitious target to limit the temperature increase to a mere 1.5°C. The decarbonization of the energy sector is a critical battleground against greenhouse gas emissions. Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) is used in electricity grids and has a global warming potential 25,300 higher than CO2. SF6 emissions are strongly rising with the extension of grids and the electrification of industries. Many nations lack SF6 inventories and exclude this potent greenhouse gas from their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This omission, along with a lack of policies, incentives, and coordination, slows down the shift to SF6-free technologies, despite their commercial feasibility.
In order to increase the visibility of SF6 impacts and alternatives, the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) together with CTCN National Designated Entity (NDE) Germany, and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Development and Climate Action are hosting the side event ‘On the Pathway to Decarbonize Electricity Grids: SF6 Transparency and Phase-out’ at COP28.
A number of high-level experts will provide insights on the regulatory and technology requirements as well as the success case of the recently adopted EU regulation on phasing out SF6 from switchgear and discuss the pathway to phasing out SF6 for developing countries in more detail.
