This portable digital X-ray machine runs on a Mobisun Solar rechargeable power bank, which ensures up to 150 people can be screened for tuberculosis (TB) using its cutting-edge technology, complete with the CAD4TB software to immediately identify potential TB patients in the community. It is particularly crucial as it ensures a clean energy source is taken to the doorsteps of the hardest-to-reach communities in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. This work is supported under the USAID-funded TB LON 1&2 project in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. 

Rather than burn fossil fuels through generators due to the very epileptic power supply in the country, the Lab in the Model Comprehensive Health Clinic SHABU runs on clean green energy, providing 24-hour TB testing capacity at no harm to the environment.

Binta Haruna is the Leader of the Hasken Mata Women Empowerment Group in Ningi, Bauchi State. She demonstrates healthy food preparation for women in her group to improve nutrition in her community. Women are encouraged to source locally available food groups - sometimes from their homestead gardens - to make healthy meals. Like the homestead approach, sustainable farming is a way to take climate action and ensure families and communities have healthy meals. 

Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria supports women empowerment groups like Hasken Mata by building their capacities around maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition and sustainable approaches like homesteading. Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria has had a USAID-funded 8-year cooperative agreement to lead social and behavior change programming.

 Model Comprehensive Health Clinic (MCHC) SHABU in Lafia, Nasarawa State is a primary healthcare centre supported by KNCV Nigeria which has a molecular TB Lab run fully on Solar energy. The lab has a GeneXpert machine and an inverter AC and consists of 18 high-capacity solar panels and 12 dry cell batteries which ensure there is enough power to Find TB cases 24hrs of the day.

A smallholder farm, First Salaam Agro Allied Enterprise operated by Salihu Idris in Chanchaga-Badeggi in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State, joined the USAID Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Extension and Advisory Activity in September 2022. Idris participated in disseminating and promoting the most impactful practices of biofertilizer use, particularly the use of biofertilizer (biochar and compost) to improve soil quality. He then farmed to demonstrate the use of locally produced biochar and compost in a community called Majin Gari in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State. 

Farmers in the community are now adopting the use of biochar and compost for their rice farming, thereby swelling the demand for biofertilizers. The use of biochar in the third farming trial saved the use of 100kg of urea in the farm, thereby ensuring no emissions in the farming cycle. The success has led Idris to establish a local biochar production facility with support from the USAID Feed the Future Migeria Agricultural Extension Activity in Majin Gari, Lavun.

The Dapaya Women Multi-Purpose Cooperative is a group of (mostly unemployed) women in Jugwol, Biu in Borno State, Nigeria. Due to the high cost and scarcity of kerosene and cooking gas, as well as erratic power supply, most households in rural communities in Biu depend on firewood as a source of cooking energy. 

To improve the economic well-being of the women, the Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity strengthened their Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) methodology and introduced them to an innovative, climate-friendly briquette production business to reduce their dependency on firewood burning and increase their income. 

The Activity partnered with Biu Women Castor and Jatropha Farmers, an agro waste-to-wealth charcoal briquette production company, which trained Dapaya Women on briquette production, supported them with briquette-producing machines and facilitated their business registration. The support has improved the productivity and income of the Dapaya Women Multi-Purpose Cooperative. The group is now producing and distributing briquettes to Biu Women Castor and Jatropha Farmers (offtakers) and households who cook with briquette stoves in their communities.

This girl and her brother to sort out their cassava produce harvested from their farm. Traditionally in Ebonyi, Nigeria, boys are conditioned to assist on the farm, while girls do house chores. 

Barriers to education disproportionately impact girls and multiply as even effects of climate change and environmental degradation lead to long-lasting negative consequences. Using an adapted Choices, Voices, Promises curriculum, community-based facilitators and implementing partners in Ebonyi state under the MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership project led small group participatory sessions for very young adolescents that challenged harmful gender norms and behaviors of adolescent girls and boys and can ultimately transform the way girls and women are perceived and treated. Now boys are able to assist girls with home chores, so that they both go to school on time, read their books, rest and have fun together. 

MOMENTUM is a global suite of awards funded by USAID to partner countries for health and resilience. The MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership - VAWG project is one of the awards being implemented in Nigeria with USAID funding - where we are engaging adolescents to address gender inequalities. Hence the picture that was submitted.

Changes in rainfall have led to the seasonal migration of men and young boys out of their homes in Sokoto communities to other parts of the country in search of greener pastures, leaving behind their wives and children. For most, the burden of care and responsibilities falls unto the wives with little or no source of income. This can lead to neglect, financial abuse, starvation, and school dropouts. To address this, Helping Hands and Grassroot Support Foundation through MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership project provide a platform for women and young adolescents affected by climate change and seasonal migration to advocate for gender equality and access to economic opportunities.

As part of the USAID-led U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, a PMI-S trained medical laboratory scientist conducts a malaria rapid diagnostic test for a malnourished child with a fever during the 2023 Therapeutic Efficacy Study on antimalaria in Nigeria. By conducting malaria rapid diagnostic tests, the medical laboratory scientist ensures that only patients with confirmed malaria receive antimalarial medication, reducing the unnecessary use of medication and mitigating the risk of resistance to antimalarial medications. This approach aligns with sustainable healthcare practices and helps preserve the efficacy of antimalarial treatments. 

Hadiza Bala bought her farm after joining the Women Empowerment Group supported by Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria. The group helps women understand how to improve the overall health and wellbeing of themselves, their families, and the community and how to start or expand their businesses. On Bala’s farm is a tree where she finds succor after long hours of farming. Planting trees protects the environment and gives people shade from the scorching sun.

Halima Jotinga is a livestock farmer based in the Jiddari Polo community in Maiduguri. Halima grows crops using hydroponics as a climate-friendly alternative to animal feed, which has become very expensive due to various macro-economic shocks such as inflation. Hydroponics is the process of growing seeds with little water and without soil. The USAID funded Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity is piloting this innovative use of hydroponic fodder technology to support its participants in adopting a climate-smart feeding practice for dairy cattle and poultry. Commercial hydroponics production has a potential to reduce farmer-herder clashes, conserve grasses for dry season use, and replace open grazing during the dry season.

The Ward Development Committee chairman utilizes the locally made hand washing machine at Samika Primary Healthcare Center in Shanga Ward, Kebbi state. The construction of a hand washing machine at the Primary Healthcare Center is a locally-led development and infrastructure project. Hand washing is critical to the response effort for public health emergencies such as Lassa fever, Ebola, and COVID-19. It also contributes to overall health and is a key behavior in the One Health approach.

The Women’s Empowerment Group approach is tied to the foundational principles of USAID’s Climate Change Strategy: Health and Gender, Equity, and Social Inclusion. Social and gender norms limit women’s access to healthcare and economic empowerment. Through the USAID-funded Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria Women’s Empowerment Groups, women from communities in Nigeria come together in a safe space to build their capacity and agency to practice healthy behaviors, engage in locally driven economic activities, and build confidence in decision-making, for household health and economic decisions, with their spouse. The Groups are local initiatives and use locally sourced foods and materials. In the context of climate change where women face even higher risks- the agency and capacity gained through the Women Empowerment Groups becomes even more critical.

Yinusa Halilu is one of the livestock feed sellers supported by the USAID funded Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity in Yola, Adamawa State. Yinusa added feed blocks to his offerings after attending RRA-facilitated training. The feed blocks are fed to cows to discourage open grazing, which is the major cause of farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria. The feed blocks can help to conserve grasses for dry season use and could easily replace open grazing during the dry season. This would help the pastoralist communities to adapt to the scarcity of grasses characterized by the dry season

This community drama performance was used to share knowledge on environmental sanitation for the prevention of Yellow Fever in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Environmental sanitation helps to protect the environment and ensure that disease-causing organisms are kept at bay. Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria uses these types of performances to share crucial information about the need to keep the environment clean and the steps people should take to protect themselves from infectious diseases.
