Mangrove forests help stabilize coastal zones and protect against flooding. A mangrove's specific root, stem, and canopy system is highly efficient at attenuating waves and currents. However, the once-abundant mangrove forests in the Mekong Delta are rapidly depleting, especially along the region's eastern and southeastern coasts. This mangrove forest in Lai Hoa village, Vinh Chau district, Soc Trang province has been degrading since 2010 and local authorities have not been successful in replanting it. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has proposed growing more mangroves inside the sea dike area and trying to help improve shrimp productivity to save some land for replanting efforts.
