This photo was taken near Lambokely, adjoining the Menabe Antimena Protected Area in Madagascar, showing devastating deforestation of the landscape following in-migration. The baobabs are a stark legacy of all that is left of a rare, species-rich, dry forest landscape, following repeated slash and burn practice, then agriculture, all within a very short time period - indeed, a paradise lost, unless the world stands with indigenous communities to improve livelihood options that are regenerative and realistic. Efforts are underway to promote an Integrated Fire Management practice, Firewise Community training, and community-based planning to reduce unwanted fire ignitions and avoid further wildfires. For this to succeed, forests must have a tangible value and benefit for communities that are struggling to survive. Partners include the United States Forest Service- International Programs and the USAID Mikajy project.
