Sustainable CIS Workstreams

Two members of the Ushahidi Mobile Team.

To advance understanding on how to bridge the funding and investment gap, Assessing Sustainability and Effectiveness of Climate Information Services in Africa (Sustainable CIS) is:

1. Developing metrics to assess sustainable and effective provision of climate information services by national meteorological services and conducting a baseline assessment of current gaps for eight target countries

The project is developing a gender-responsive baseline survey methodology to:

  • explore cost-effective combinations of technologies for weather observation, data storage, and analysis
  • identify institutional capacity and systems for communicating climate information by national meteorological services, and
  • evaluate training and human development requirements for national meteorological services operations
2. Identifying business models for climate information services  and options to improve the sustainability of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services including collaboration with the private sector

The project is carrying out a market assessment and reviewing private sector business models and technology innovations for communication of climate information services in the target country contexts.  We are also assessing financial models for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and climate information services delivery and policy implications of different financing models.  Gender sensitive considerations are being examined in various contexts to understand the different demand and market potentials between women and men.

3. Building partnerships, synthesis knowledge and ensure uptake of lessons

Success lies in building partnerships and collaborations amongst key stakeholders in Senegal, Niger, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Niger, and Malawi.  Information from the project is being generated and curated to develop useful knowledge products to ensure the uptake of lessons learned amongst a wide set of audiences.
