This webinar examines the link between auctions and the social impacts of renewable energy projects.

Policymakers are accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy with renewable energy auctions, which can also reap social and economic benefits. However, if authorities and auction bidders fail to engage local communities or understand the social impact of renewable energy projects, it can lead to harmful outcomes for the communities and financial losses for the developers.

On March 2, 2022, USAID’s Scaling Up Renewable Energy program hosted a webinar that examined the link between auctions and the social impacts of renewable energy projects.

The webinar discussed topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Auction design options and measures for policymakers to address the social impact of renewable energy projects awarded in auctions;
  • How to address specific objectives such as the timely commissioning of projects or to encourage best-value bids beyond price;
  • How supportive measures outside the auction can complement auction design options and contribute to the achievement of social impact objectives and local acceptance of awarded projects; and
  • Strategic approaches to engage in meaningful consultation and raise awareness of future energy projects with local communities to ensure a just and inclusive transition to clean energy.
