Advancing Data-Driven Clean Energy and Green Growth in Vietnam
This document reports on the success story of the Green Growth Task Force established in the Thanh Hoa province in Vietnam. The Task Force was created to support the country’s National Green Growth Strategy which established a vision to enhance low-emission, climate-resilient development. In conjunction with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Task Force formulated data-driven renewable energy targets for the province, and with the help of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Renewable Energy (RE) Data Explorer tool was created to estimate generation potential for solar, wind, and biomass energy.
Thanh Hoa’s Green Growth Action Plan established a target of more than 140 megawatts of renewable energy installed in the province by 2030, and data and analyses from the RE Data Explorer tool helped to shape those targets. This tool is an open-source, map-based web application that provides an intuitive, user-friendly interface for visualizing data and estimating renewable energy potential. It is available for the Lower Mekong region of Asia and is being developed for a number of additional countries and regions.
