Fact Sheet: South Africa's Low Emissions Development (SA-LED)
This factsheet provides information on the approach and objectives of USAID’s partnership with the South Africa Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to provide technical assistance to help South Africa transform its economy to support jobs and sustainable growth, while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
The United States Government aims to assist the Government of South Africa to move towards emissions reduction targets set in the 2011 National Climate Change Response White Paper. With approximately $10 million funding, USAID highlights three key objectives:
- Incorporate low emissions development strategies within public sector models for integrated infrastructure and development planning.
- Expand South Africa’s emissions monitoring and reporting capabilities.
- Facilitate private sector participation in a range of low emissions bankable projects.
USAID and the South Africa Government have an agreed work program and are negotiating a timeline for program development and implementation.
