Fact Sheet: Sustainable & Thriving Environments for West Africa Regional Development Phase III (STEWARD)
This fact sheet provides an overview of USAID’s STEWARD Phase III project.
Expanding on the results from STEWARD Phases I & II, the objectives of STEWARD Phase III are to continue efforts to conserve biodiversity in the Upper Guinean Tropical Forest. Increased human activity and fragmentation has resulted in severe degradation of the forest and has reduced forest coverage to approximately 15 percent of its original coverage.
In an effort to preserve vital ecosystems, components of this objective, which are highlighted on the fact sheet, include:
- Promoting sustainable livelihoods and forest management plans.
- Developing climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene systems and services.
- Monitoring program impact on land, and improving policy and legal frameworks.
- Developing viable payment for ecosystem service models, and viable and sustainable non-timber forest product value chains.
