Gender Equality for Climate Change Opportunities (GECCO) Factsheet
This factsheet explains Gender Equality for Climate Change Opportunities (GECCO), a five-year initiative to further empower women and enhance gender equality through, and for the benefit of, climate change and development outcomes.
The initiative provides support options for national, regional, and global activities that advance women’s empowerment and gender equality. It is designed to complement existing or emerging USAID efforts on climate change. It is being carried out through a grant to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The factsheet explains why GECCO is important, what is working, what it means for Missions, its timeframe and budget, and how it will impact Missions’ development programs.
It notes that there is a positive correlation between the level of women’s representation and a country’s efforts toward sustainability, but inequalities persist and many climate initiatives don’t address gender sufficiently. Gender equality and women’s empowerment could open the door to better development outcomes - including reducing emissions and building resilience to climate change.
It notes that in partnership with IUCN, 13 governments and regional bodies have developed climate change gender action plans that are part of national climate programs.
