Ethiopia emitted 141 million metric tons (MtCO2e) in 2011, with 61 percent of greenhouse gas emissions coming from the agriculture sector. Greenhouse gas emissions in Ethiopia increased by 86 percent from 1993 - 2011. Gross domestic product grew faster than total greenhouse gas emissions, indicating that the carbon intensity of the economy in 2011 had decreased relative to 1991.
Through the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution, Ethiopia pledges to cap 2030 greenhouse gas emissions at 145 MtCO2e, a 64 percent reduction from projected business as usual emission levels in 2030. The pledge includes greenhouse gas reductions from agriculture, forestry, industry, transport and buildings sectors.
