Greenhouse Gas Emissions Factsheet: Madagascar

This factsheet breaks down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Madagascar in 2011 by sector, emissions trends, how emissions relate to gross domestic product (GDP) and the country’s mitigation strategies.

 
Madagascar emitted 57 million metric tons (MtCO2e) in 2011, with the land-use change and forestry sector contributing 57 percent to overall emissions, followed by the agriculture sector at 41 percent. 
 
Greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 3.5 million metric tons (MtCO2e) from 1990 - 2011, while gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 55 percent in the same time period. 
 
Madagascar aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 14 percent by 2030, conditional upon financial support from the international community. Mitigation actions include reforestation, enhanced forest and grassland monitoring, climate-smart rice farming techniques, increased hydropower and solar energy, sustainable cookstoves and energy efficiency.
