LEDS Capacity Building for Government of Macedonia Institutions — A Pathway to Sustainable Development
This case study describes the Clean Energy Investment Project, a USAID project in Macedonia aimed at helping it to create and implement low emissions development strategies (LEDS).
The main objective was to deliver recommendations on how to integrate LEDS elements into a national strategic development plan. This initiative was implemented in close cooperation with the cabinet of Macedonia’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs.
Implementors with Winrock International reached out to relevant ministries and institutions through questionnaires and created a final report containing recommendations. They also held a workshop for members of a technical working group.
This process of developing the LEDS mapping was coordinated by the cabinet with participation from representatives of relevant institutions, thus increasing their knowledge regarding such strategies. It included identifying synergies between LEDS and sustainable development in the national context and examining how LEDS is addressed by relevant national, international and EU planning documents.
A guiding document containing the results was to be presented at a planning session of the National Council for Sustainable Development.
