Mitigation and Adaptation: Managing Forest Conflicts in the Context of Climate Change for the ASEAN Region
New climate mitigation and adaptation policies can increase the risk of conflict over land tenure and rights in forest areas. As efforts are made to reduce deforestation and degradation through the REDD+ initiative, more claims over forests and land are being made.
The course explained these conflicts and gave participants tools to manage them. It included a trip to Oddar Meanchey, a mountainous area in northwestern Cambodia where conflicts have affected a REDD+ project. This gave them the chance to practice what they had learned.
The course was part of an effort to build the capacity of the ASEAN Social Forestry Network, which was created to develop community forestry in ASEAN countries and strengthen its linkages to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
