Renewable Energy (RE) Data Explorer
The Renewable Energy (RE) Data Explorer is a dynamic, online platform that facilitates renewable energy decision-making, investment and deployment. The RE Data Explorer uses geospatial and spatiotemporal renewable energy data to visualize, execute and support analysis of potential renewable energy (solar, wind and biomass) capacity and generation within a country or region, under various user-defined scenarios. The tool can help users identify tradeoffs and synergies, inform prospecting, selection of priority sites, energy production targets, integrated power sector planning, sustainable land use, policymaking and other development considerations to accelerate renewable energy investment and deployment. The RE Data Explorer is user-friendly, requiring no geographic information systems expertise. RE Data Explorer tools and guided tutorials are currently available for Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, the Lower Mekong region of Asia, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines.
Inputs and Outputs
Users select a region or country of interest on the tool map or country list and then select different layers of data for display on the map. These layers include wind and solar resources, transportation network, infrastructure, transmission line, land use and elevation data. To view specific values for data layers, users can click on points on the map within the country of interest or perform a query for a custom shape drawn on the map. For analysis on power generation and capacity by resource and location, users can run an analysis based on data users select about landscape type, technology type, power density, slope characteristics and proximity to infrastructure.
Users may download and print results and map outputs from the tool.
Only publicly available data is pre-loaded in the RE Data Explorer, therefore users may be limited by the available data layers and data resolution for each individual country.
