Strategy and Action Plan for Greening Mohair Production
This strategy and action plan identifies several challenges constraining the production of mohair and proposes solutions to green and grow the mohair industry in South Africa. Until recently, the mohair market was not significantly affected by issues relating to sustainable production. Sustainability is, however, now becoming a key market access issue. Mohair is a luxury product and the relatively wealthy and informed buyers of mohair are increasingly demanding fair labor practices, humane treatment of the animals, and environmentally sustainable farming and processing along the value chain. Consequently, retailers are moving towards demanding verification (through traceability) that producers are meeting minimum sustainability standards. Apart from animal welfare benefits and better working conditions valued by the market, and which could translate into higher demand and better prices for mohair, greening the value chain can also bring a range of environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
