Success Story - Addressing Climate Change through Sustainable Integrated Urban Planning

In 2018, the USAID South Africa Low Emissions Development (SA-LED) program engaged EcoDistricts, a U.S.-based non-governmental organization, to deliver a one-day training for 70 municipal staff from the City of Johannesburg in South Africa. The training centered on the EcoDistricts Protocol, a comprehensive process and project management framework in which equity, resilience, and climate protection are the cornerstone of sustainable urban development. This success story highlights Liana Strydom, a participant of the workshop and the assistant director for regional planning for the City of Johannesburg and details how her engagement with EcoDistricts through SA-LED's support has enabled her to adopt aspects of the Protocol in her work in regional planning for the City and in furthering South Africa's national climate change mitigation commitments.
