Video - Students in Polokwane Conduct Energy Audits for Municipal Buildings in South Africa
In South Africa, comprehensive baseline data on energy consumption is the key to accessing grant funding from the national government’s Energy Efficient and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) program. Most municipalities, however, have neither the energy consumption baseline information readily available nor the capacity to conduct energy audits to obtain this information. The USAID South Africa Low Emissions Development (SA-LED) program therefore sought to support municipalities in conducting these audits. In Polokwane, SA-LED engaged 20 electrical engineering students from a local college, training them on how to conduct the audit then supporting them in performing the audits. Engaging these students in the energy audits represents a cost effective, educational way to support the municipality in applying to EEDSM funding—a practice that can be replicated in other municipalities in similar positions. This video shows highlights from this engagement.
