Launched in 2015, Climatelinks is a global knowledge portal for USAID staff, implementing partners, and the broader community working at the intersection of climate change and international development. The portal curates and archives technical guidance and knowledge related to USAID’s work to help countries mitigate and adapt to climate change.

We aim for this portal to improve climate change and development programming, amplifying the impact of USAID’s investments into the future. We hope Climatelinks becomes a place for development practitioners to help identify and refine practices, and to inform USAID’s technical direction in areas of information gaps.

Climate Risk Profile: Eastern and Southern Caribbean

USAID’s development assistance in the Eastern and Southern Caribbean (ESC) region extends to 11 countries: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. The high vulnerability to, and potential for, climate impacts throughout the region often drive direct integration of climate risk management into the country and regional planning processes.

Brazil is home to 60 percent of the Amazon Basin and contains biodiverse ecosystems that provide essential services both regionally and globally. Brazil plays a critical role in the global fight against climate change, as the Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s largest land “carbon sinks,” removing more greenhouse gases (GHG) from the atmosphere than it emits.

Working side-by-side with local partners, USAID’s Amazon Regional Environment Program (AREP) envisions a healthy and resilient Amazon that is valued by society, ensures human well-being, and safeguards our global climate. In total, USAID programs in the Amazon contributed towards the reduction of 38.5 million tons of CO2 emissions in 2020.

Increased Access and Use of Modern Energy Sources

Although LAC countries continue to rely heavily on non-renewable energies, renewables have grown in the region and represent a significant share of the total energy supply. More than half of electricity generation comes from renewable sources, mainly hydropower, which is more than twice the global average.
