Malawi’s forests are under severe threat due to primarily to an over reliance on illegal and unsustainably produced charcoal for urban cooking and heating fuel. The country’s high population growth is adding even more pressure to the situation. More than 96% of Malawian households rely on firewood and charcoal as their primary cooking fuels, and more than three quarters of all urban households rely on charcoal as their primary source of cooking and heating energy, which is the most significant driver of deforestation and forest degradation.

Co-funded by USAID & UKaid, Modern Cooking for Healthy Forests (MCHF) is a 5-year activity designed to support the Government of Malawi to promote sustainable forest management and improved energy options to maintain forest cover and reduce emissions. MCHF focuses on reducing the illegal and unsustainable demand for charcoal as a cooking fuel though a robust strategy that scales up the production of a sustainable wood fuel supply, promotes the adoption of alternative cooking energies and fuel-efficient cooking technologies, and strengthens forest governance systems in deforestation hotspots.

The adaptation of the local community to climatic effects by setting up economical tree gardens is very effective in combating global warming and famine at the same time.

Given the global warming in Ituri caused by deforestation linked to armed conflicts, use of trees as sticks for houses and others, reforestation has become very essential in Ituri because since 2013 until today the temperature is still rising and also the waters of lake albert continues to rise for the same cause global warming.

This evocative view was found outside of the "inn" that my motorcycle driver, Mr. Hiep, selected for the final night of our six-night tour through Vietnam's Central Highlands.

After going over the pass and crossing into the true Central Highlands, views like this were the norm. Mountains, pine trees, coffee plants as far as the eye could see.

This view was spotted on the first day, as we drove from coastal Nha Trang upward, into mountainous central Vietnam. It was beautiful, but looking back, it was also one of the first of many instances where I spotted deforestation on my trip.
