Natural disasters don’t discriminate based on age. Everyone in a community is affected when a typhoon hits, from the youngest to the oldest. Given that climate change is driving an increase in the number and severity of storms, floods, and drought, even young children need to learn to be prepared.

Less than half of Nigeria’s 186 million people have access to electricity. But in the rural village of Gbamu Gbamu, newly installed utility poles and wires act as markers of a brighter future, powered by a new solar minigrid. The grid, an effort of local developers Rubitec Solar and Winrock’s USAID-funded Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (REEEP), is empowering citizens and their enterprises, providing them with a better quality of life and more stable sources of income.

In the Dagana district of Senegal, Moustapha Aminata walks out to his rice paddies and looks to the sky for signs of rain. In 2009, floods wiped out his crop, but now dry years seem to come around more frequently than ever and Moustapha worries about how he and his family will withstand another year of low yields.

A new paper by Michael Clark and David Tilman reviewed 164 published life cycle analyses of more than 90 foods to compare how different ways of growing food, and choices about which food to produce, affect five aspects of the environment: land use, fuel consumption, nutrient run-off, ecosystem acidification and GHG emissions.

Through the Scaling Up Renewable Energy program (SURE), USAID assisted the Fund for Non-Conventional Energy and Energy Efficiency (FENOGE) to promote gender equality and female empowerment in the Colombian energy sector. Their new Gender and Diversity Policy systematically integrates diversity, inclusion, and gender equality principles and aims to promote female participation in the energy sector, reduce female poverty in the energy sector, and reduce gender-based violence.

Examples of this approach abound, ranging from the current USAID Reducing Pollution project, which has engaged participants from across Vietnam’s government to analyze air and plastic pollution issues, and create data-based action plans, to our recently-concluded Vietnam Forests and Deltas project.
