The new global Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Project was one of the first activities to undergo USAID’s CRM process. The resulting extensive climate risk assessment highlighted the need to include strategies, interventions and assessments to build climate resilience both into program implementation and among beneficiaries in activity design.

Beverage company AB InBev and its Uganda subsidiary Nile Breweries has explored ways to increase the resilience of their small-scale grain farmers to the effects of climate change. The USAID Climate Economic Analysis for Development, Investment and Resilience (CEADIR) activity designed and implemented a regional activity to accelerate CE private sector investment aligned with national climate change commitments (e.g., Nationally Determined Contributions or NDCs) and CE policy objectives in the target countries of India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

We’ve all heard the numbers – the global infrastructure investment needed to keep up with projected economic growth is severely lacking. In cities, where 54% of the world’s population now lives, it is estimated that US$4.1 to 4.3 trillion in urban infrastructure investments is needed. To make that infrastructure climate resilient and emission reducing, the estimate increases by 9-27%.

Recent reports are taking an economic view of climate impacts, making a clear case for acting early rather than reacting late. The Global Commission on Adaptation’s 2019 report, Adapt Now: A Global Call for Leadership on Climate Resilience, warns leaders around the world that we simply cannot afford the costs of inaction on climate change.
