Senegal's Youth in the Fishing Industry

In Senegal, traditional fishing boats are called "pirogues." Today, Senegalese youth in the city of Joal face obstacles entering the fishing industry, including limited education and resources, competition, and environmental concerns. USAID Feed the Future’s Dekkal Geej project works with local fishers, the Senegalese government, and the private sector to improve food security, increase incomes and strengthen climate resilience through education.

Enabling Environment Considerations for Water Use in Agriculture

In this post, the Feed the Future Enabling Environment for Food Security (EEFS) project describes how its Water Governance Scorecard can inform policy discussions on water use within the agriculture sector. Water is at the nexus of food security and climate risk management. Smallholder farmers depend on reliable access to water to support production through rainfall and/or irrigation systems. As climate risks mount, variability in water availability and allocation will affect the competitiveness and resilience of the agriculture sector.

Agriculture Support Standards in Response to Climate-Related Disasters

To better support the livelihoods of farming communities and their resilience, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance is supporting a project called Standards for Supporting Agricultural Livelihoods in Emergencies (SEADS) to develop evidence-based practice standards for humanitarian agencies that provide crop-related assistance in emergencies. This support can include providing seeds and fertilizer, offering tools and training support, or rebuilding damaged infrastructure, such as irrigation schemes, but all with an emphasis on market-based delivery mechanisms.

Incorporate Results of the Strategy-Level Climate Risk Screening

Incorporating results is the third phase of climate risk management (CRM) for strategies, after conducting the strategy-level climate risk screening. To realize the benefits of CRM, design teams must incorporate screening results into strategy design. Incorporating CRM into strategy design not only ensures the sustainability, resilience and impact of USAID’s strategic development objectives, but also facilitates consideration of climate risks during project and activity design and implementation.

Mangroves Have a Higher Economic Value Than Shrimp Ponds in Indonesia

Half of the world’s total mangrove deforestation since 2000 has been in Indonesia, where the main driver has been conversion for shrimp ponds. A new cost-benefit analysis by the USAID-funded Climate Economic Analysis Development, Investment, and Resilience (CEADIR) Activity sheds light on the financial and economic value of mangrove conservation. Income losses from mangrove-supported activities eventually outweigh shrimp revenues in the converted areas.

Cowpeas Save The Day

Janet Banda holds a portion of her cowpeas harvest after a difficult farming season characterized by drought exacerbated by El Niño in rural Kariba, Zimbabwe. Janet received cowpeas seed input in November under the USAID-funded Strengthening Community Resilience Through Diversified Livelihoods and Access to WASH Services in Gokwe North and Kariba Districts project, where she was encouraged to embrace small grains to counter climate change.

Insuring Against Climate Risk to Help Women Farmers Grow

At the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson announced that the NASA and USAID SERVIR partnership will use USAID funds to support the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in integrating gender and Earth observations into the risk financing sector to build local and regional resilience to climate shocks. The SERVIR partnership works with countries and institutions around the world to tackle development challenges through an approach that uses satellite data to address climate change, food and water security, disasters, land use, and air quality.

RALI - Resources to Advance LEDS Implementation

The RALI project helped developing countries speed their transition to climate-resilient, low-emission, and sustainable economic growth. RALI supported the technically rigorous development and implementation of low emission development strategies (LEDS) by providing tools, technical assistance, and resources to support USAID and its partners, as well as host country governments in the implementation of low emission development strategies. RALI developed the online CLEER Tool, for example, which provides a standard platform for estimating, tracking, and reporting emission reductions from clean energy programs.

A host community for refugees from South Sudan, Palabek Ogili has seen pressure on the natural resource base of its community dramatically increase since the opening of Palabek refugee settlement a few years ago. Recognizing that competition for scarce resources between refugees and host community members can lead to even greater conflict and environmental degradation, African Women Rising’s Resilience Design field crop program helps farmers conserve precious water and soil resources as they continue to grow food to feed their families.

Looking Towards a Sustainable Palm Oil Sector

Nelly Lozano peers into the palm trees on her 22 hectare property near Neshuya, Peru. Lozano and her family are among 700 families in two small-scale producer organizations working with the Amazonia Connect Initiative, a partnership between USAID, Solidaridad, Earth Innovation Institute, National Wildlife Federation, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The initiative promotes and scales the adoption of low-emission commodity production and rural development to improve biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in the Amazon biome across Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.

Adapt Asia-Pacific

The Climate Change Adaptation Project Preparation Facility for Asia and the Pacific Activity (Adapt Asia-Pacific), funded by USAID and the US Department of State, covered 13 countries in Asia and 14 Pacific Small Island Developing States. The project built the capacity of governments to adapt to climate change and provided technical assistance to prepare organizations to access and receive climate funding for projects that increased resilience to the negative impacts of climate change. Adapt Asia-Pacific leveraged over $576M in financing for climate change adaptation projects that benefited almost one million people. Working with national and international partners, Adapt Asia-Pacific helped develop 36 adaptation projects, including 9 gender-inclusive projects, in 14 countries across the Asia-Pacific, and provided over 1,000 people with 25,000 person hours of training.
