Climate finance can and should be more inclusive of marginalized and underserved groups, including women, youth, Indigenous Peoples, low-income people, and people in remote areas. To that end, we believe it is essential for private investors to distinguish between two types of inclusion when designing climate investments: Individual inclusion, which engages individual members of a marginalized group, and collective inclusion, which engages a marginalized group as a whole.

The tropical air hangs over the Sierra Leonean coastal village of Gbongboma like a moist towel. Musa Lahai sits in an enclave of thatched huts, surrounded by women and children sitting around two cooking fires. Orange flames lick the sides of several large kettles of fish stew. Each fish was hard to come by. “Before, we were catching good fish. Now, we’re not,” Lahai says. He is deputy chief of the village, where approximately 90 people survive off earth’s bounties, from harvesting oysters, to deep sea fishing, to farming and growing palm fruit.

With training from Heifer Nepal, this farmer learned about better feeding practices and other livestock care techniques, quadrupling the amount of milk her cows produce for her family’s food and income. By feeding their cattle a gut-friendly diet year-round, the farmer and her community are caring for the environment by aiding in reducing methane emissions produced by livestock.
